Parking at the Airport Cost: What Drives Your Total

Parking at the airport cost is whatever the airport operator charges for the product you enter and the clock time until you leave. It is not a national average, and it is not the same number for every garage at the same airport.

What builds the parking at the airport cost

Three levers decide the total:

• Product tier — terminal or central garage, economy or remote, reserved or valet.
• Stay length — hourly bands, a daily or 24-hour maximum, or a weekly cap.
• How you buy — drive-up posted rates versus a prepaid reservation.

Tax treatment also differs. Los Angeles World Airports says fees include 10% Los Angeles City Parking Occupancy Tax. San Francisco International Airport says stall rates include all taxes and fees. Port of Seattle says SEA public parking rates include all taxes and fees. Read the footnote on the operator page before you compare two airports by the headline number alone.

Official drive-up examples at four large hubs

These figures are from the airport operators’ parking pages. They illustrate the spread — not a national price list.

At one airport, the gap between products is large. At LAX, Budget at $20 maximum sits far below CTA general at $60. At DFW, remote at $14.00 for 6–24 hours is less than half of terminal at $32.00. At SFO, Long-Term at $27 max undercuts the Domestic Garage at $39. The cheaper lot usually adds a shuttle or AirTrain transfer — factor that time into your arrival plan before you book.

Hourly slices vs the daily maximum

For a short pickup, the first hour can dominate. For an overnight trip, the daily or 24-hour maximum is the number that matters.

• LAX CTA general: 10 minutes free; $9 first hour or fraction thereof ($11 in P3 and P4); $7 each 30 minutes after ($9 in P3 and P4); $60 maximum per 24-hour period. Premium lists $70 maximum; valet lists $75 maximum with a 24-hour minimum.
• SFO Domestic Garage: $4 per 30 minutes, $39 max per 24 hours; no vehicles over 6' 6".
• DFW terminal: 0–8 mins $9.00; 8–30 mins $2.00; 30 mins–2 hrs $3.00; 2–4 hrs $10.00; 4–6 hrs $12.00; 6–24 hrs $32.00.
• DFW remote: 0–2 hrs $2.00; 2–4 hrs $3.00; 4–6 hrs $4.00; 6–24 hrs $14.00.
• SEA General Parking: $8.00 hourly, $37.00 daily, $222.00 weekly.

If someone is only collecting you, look for a free waiting option instead of entering paid parking. LAX has two cell-phone waiting lots where motorists meeting arriving passengers can wait for free, up to two hours, until passengers are ready in the Central Terminal Area.

Worked examples: same trip, different products

Use published daily or 24-hour maxima as a planning floor for multi-day trips. Multiply carefully — some products bill by daily caps, others by rolling 24-hour periods — and always re-check the operator page for your dates.

• Three 24-hour periods at SFO: Domestic Garage drive-up at $39 max per 24 hours is $117 before any prebook discount. Long-Term at $27 max per 24 hours is $81 for the same interval, with AirTrain to the terminals (service runs 24 hours a day, with station departures as frequent as every 4 minutes).
• Three 6–24 hour blocks at DFW: Terminal drive-up at $32.00 is $96. Remote at $14.00 is $42, with non-stop bus service to the terminal. DFW also advertises save up to 50% off when you prebook either product.
• Three days at LAX: CTA general at $60 maximum per 24-hour period is $180. Economy at $35 maximum is $105. Budget at $20 maximum is $60. Economy and Budget include complimentary shuttle service to the Central Terminal Area.
• A week at SEA General Parking: Port of Seattle publishes a $222.00 weekly rate, which can undercut seven separate $37.00 daily charges when your stay spans a full week.

Those examples show why the parking at the airport cost is a product decision, not a single airport average. A lower line item that adds a shuttle cycle can still be the better total if you build that transfer into your arrival time — LAX Budget publishes shuttle service every 20 to 25 minutes.

How prebook changes the parking at the airport cost

Drive-up is the published ceiling. Reservations can lower it when the operator runs a prepaid product:

• DFW advertises save up to 50% off when you prebook (terminal and remote pages).
• LAX lists reserved parking savings up to 60% off drive-up rates.
• SFO says its lowest rates are only available through the online booking system, and you can change or cancel up to 2 hours before the booked entry time.
• SEA sells Reserved Parking on Floor 4 at $47.00 per 24-hour period; advance reservations are required for that floor.

A reservation is a contract with entry and exit rules. Entering the wrong lane, arriving early, or overstaying can push you onto drive-up rates. Read the confirmation before you leave home.

How to price your stay before you drive

1. Open the airport’s own parking page — LAX, SFO, DFW and SEA each publish current products. Skip aggregator roundups for the posted rate.
2. Write exact entry and exit times — include the buffer before departure and after landing.
3. Compare the right products — terminal vs economy or remote, covered vs uncovered, walkable vs shuttle or AirTrain.
4. Apply the billing unit — hourly bands, daily maximums, 24-hour periods and weekly caps are not interchangeable.
5. Check tax, payment and stay limits — DFW does not accept cash and limits parking to 90 days; LAX subjects vehicles parked over 30 days to impound; SEA travelers parking more than 30 days must reserve online or arrange with the Public Parking Office.

Payment quirks that change the total

How you pay does not always change the rate, but it can change whether you get the rate you planned for. DFW International Airport uses contactless payment and does not accept cash for terminal or remote parking. LAX accepts cash at pay-on-foot machines, plus major credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and debit cards. SFO uses a contactless booking system with a QR code for garage entry and exit when you prepay online.

Stay limits also protect the airport from abandoned vehicles — and they can erase a cheap long-trip plan. DFW limits parking to 90 days. LAX subjects vehicles parked for over 30 days to impound. SEA requires travelers parking more than 30 days to reserve online or make special arrangements through the Public Parking Office.

Clearance and oversized vehicles

Garage height can force a different product. SFO Domestic Garage lists no vehicles over 6' 6". SFO Long-Term Garage 1 lists 6'10" and Garage 2 lists 8'2", with surface-lot parking for vehicles 8'2" and over. SEA’s garage height limit is 6'10"; over-height parking is first-come, first-served with a limited outdoor lot. Confirm clearance on the operator page before you commit to a garage.
