Airport parking lots are the official on-airport places to leave your car — terminal garages, economy or long-term lots farther out, and free cell-phone waiting areas for pickup. Los Angeles World Airports runs Central Terminal Area structures plus Economy and Budget lots with complimentary CTA shuttles. San Francisco International Airport connects Long-Term Parking to terminals on AirTrain. Minneapolis–Saint Paul and Seattle-Tacoma sell advance reservations that guarantee a space. Book on the airport’s own parking page before you drive.

Key facts

Airport parking lots are not one product. The right choice is the lot that matches your trip length, terminal, and how much walking or shuttle time you can afford before check-in.

What “airport parking lots” means

On-airport lots are run by the airport operator (or its parking contractor), not by a random third-party website. The usual menu looks like this:

For posted hourly slices and daily maxima, see airport parking prices. See how to navigate an airport.

  • Open the airport’s own parking page — LAX, SFO, MSP, and SEA each publish live products, height limits, and reservation links there.
  • Match trip length to lot type — pickup and short visits belong in hourly or cell-phone lots; multi-day trips usually belong in economy, value, or long-term lots.
  • Prebook when the operator guarantees space — MSP says prebook at least 12 hours before travel for a guaranteed spot. SEA Reserved Parking requires an advance reservation at least 6 hours prior to entry. SFO online bookings can be changed or cancelled up to 2 hours before entry. LAX sells reserved parking with a guaranteed space and a free shuttle to the terminal.
  • Check height limits — SEA’s garage height limit is 6'10" (over-height parking is a separate limited lot). LAX marks vertical clearances on each CTA structure entrance. SFO Long-Term lists garage height limits and a surface lot for taller vehicles.
  • Terminal garages vs economy and long-term lots

Terminal-side lots cut walk time. Los Angeles World Airports places Central Terminal Area structures just across from the passenger terminals. MSP Daily Parking at Terminal 1 uses a skyway (Level 3) or a brief tram ride (Level T). SEA’s onsite garage is built for both short- and long-term stays without a shuttle for Reserved Parking on Floor 4.

Economy and long-term lots trade a short transfer for a lower daily product. LAX Economy and Budget lots use complimentary CTA shuttles. SFO Long-Term Parking is the airport’s most affordable option and rides AirTrain to all terminals. MSP Value Parking sits at Terminal 2 and connects to Terminal 1 on free light rail; Quick Ride Ramp includes 24/7 curbside shuttle service at the value rate.

Cell-phone waiting lots are not overnight parking

If you are only picking someone up, do not pull a ticket into a paid garage until the passenger is curbside-ready. LAX has two cell-phone waiting lots where motorists meeting arriving passengers can wait for free for up to two hours. MSP publishes a free cell-phone waiting lot on Post Road. Vehicles in LAX cell-phone lots must be attended; commercial and ride-service vehicles are not allowed.

Reservations, live availability, and long stays

MSP shows real-time availability across ramps and updates that data every 15 minutes. SEA Reserved Parking guarantees space in a dedicated Floor 4 area regardless of garage occupancy; customers may reserve up to 120 days in advance depending on availability, and may modify or cancel up to six hours before the reserved entry time without penalty.

Long stays have hard cutoffs. At LAX, vehicles parked for over 30 days are subject to impound unless you arrange an extension with the parking operator named on the LAX page. At SEA, travelers parking for more than 30 days must reserve online or make special arrangements through the Public Parking Office.

Products, shuttle times, and posted rates change. Confirm the lot and the transfer on the official airport page — and the sign at the entrance — on the day you travel, especially on a first-time flight when you still need time for airport security screening after you leave the car.

    Frequently asked questions

    What are airport parking lots?

Official on-airport places to leave a car: terminal or central garages, economy/budget/long-term lots farther from the curb, reserved sections you book ahead, and free cell-phone waiting areas for short pickups.

What types of airport parking lots should I use?

Use a terminal garage for the shortest walk, economy or long-term lots for multi-day trips when a shuttle or AirTrain is fine, reserved parking when you need a guaranteed space, and a cell-phone lot only for free short waits before curb pickup.

Do airport parking lots have free cell-phone waiting?

Many do for pickup only. LAX has two free cell-phone waiting lots for up to two hours. MSP lists a free cell-phone waiting lot on Post Road. They are not overnight parking.

Should I reserve airport parking lots in advance?

Yes when the airport sells a guarantee. MSP prebook (at least 12 hours before travel) guarantees a spot. SEA Reserved Parking requires a reservation at least 6 hours prior to entry. LAX reserved parking guarantees a space. SFO online bookings can be changed or cancelled up to 2 hours before entry.

How do I get from economy airport parking lots to the terminal?

It depends on the airport. LAX Economy and Budget use complimentary CTA shuttles. SFO Long-Term uses AirTrain Blue Line (24 hours a day; as frequent as every 4 minutes). MSP Value Parking uses free light rail between Terminal 2 and Terminal 1.

How long can I leave a car in airport parking lots?

Check the operator. LAX vehicles parked over 30 days are subject to impound unless you arrange an extension. SEA travelers parking more than 30 days must reserve online or contact the Public Parking Office, or the vehicle may be considered abandoned.
