First Time Flying — What to Expect

What happens on your first flight, from arrival to takeoff

You will: enter the terminal → check in / drop bags → clear security → wait at the gate → board → taxi → take off. Each step has signs. Staff repeat the same instructions all day — ask them if a sign is unclear.

Checking in and dropping your bag

If you checked in online, you may only need bag drop. Bring passport and booking reference. Carts at LHR may need a coin; other hubs differ.

Going through security for the first time

Have liquids and laptop ready. US flights use TSA 3-1-1. UK/EU flights use 100 ml liquid limits. Follow the tray pictures on the wall. Secondary screening is routine.

Finding your gate and boarding

Read the departures board for gate number and status. Start walking when the gate posts — large airports have long walks (Istanbul piers; ATL Plane Train 15–20 minutes between distant gates).

What the flight itself is like

Safety briefing covers seatbelts, exits, and oxygen masks. Engines are loudest on takeoff; cabin lights and seatbelt signs change during climb and landing. Cabin crew give clear commands if they need aisles cleared.

• Pushback / taxi: aircraft moves to the runway; seatbelt sign usually on.
• Takeoff roll: acceleration; landing gear retracts with a thud after lift-off — normal.
• Climb / cruise: seatbelt sign may turn off; turbulence can still appear — sit if the sign returns.
• Descent / landing: ears may pop; flaps/gear noises return; reverse thrust after touchdown is loud and brief.
