If you searched parking lot airport, you most likely need to decide which lot to use and how to get from it to your terminal. Start with the airport operator's official parking page. It lists the facilities that are actually open, shows how each one connects to the terminals, and explains entry, payment and height limits. What is an airport parking lot?

An airport parking lot is any facility run by or for the airport where passengers, visitors and pickup drivers leave a vehicle. The detail that matters most is where it sits relative to the terminal. The Chicago Department of Aviation, for example, lists the hourly and daily levels of the O'Hare Main Garage as adjacent to the domestic terminals, while Economy Lot H sits out along Bessie Coleman Drive. Which airport parking lot should you choose?

Lot names are not standard. O'Hare uses the Main Garage plus Economy Lots F, G and H. How to use a parking lot at the airport

1. Open the official airport parking page. Match the airport and terminal on your boarding pass, then read any closure or capacity advisory posted there.
2. Check live availability. Many airports publish real-time occupancy. MSP says its ramp availability data updates every 15 minutes.
3. Confirm your vehicle fits. Height clearance differs by garage, and O'Hare publishes the clearance for Economy Lot F on its economy parking page.
4. Decide whether to prebook. Read the cut-off and cancellation terms before paying, then save the confirmation or QR code offline.
5. Follow airport signs to the named lot. Do not assume every entrance reaches every terminal.
6. Record where you parked. Photograph the level, row and nearest marker, and note the shuttle stop or train station you used.
7. Keep the payment method ready for exit. At O'Hare you pay the cashier when leaving the lot; the Port Authority says JFK accepts credit and debit cards, E-ZPass and contactless payments such as Apple Pay.

Walking lot, shuttle lot or airport train?

Compare the full route from car to check-in, not just the lot name. O'Hare says Economy Lot F sits on floors 4 and 5 of the Multi-Modal Facility, where travelers board the free Airport Transit System to all terminals. Shuttle buses from Economy Lots G and H make their final stop at the same facility, and O'Hare says the transit system and lot shuttles operate 24 hours a day. At MSP, Value Parking sits at Terminal 2 and connects to Terminal 1 by free light rail, Daily Parking reaches Terminal 1 by skyway or a short tram ride, and the Quick Ride Ramp includes 24/7 curbside shuttle service. At JFK, the Port Authority says the AirTrain connects passengers to terminals, airport parking lots and the hotel shuttle area.

Do you need to reserve airport parking?

Not always, but at busy airports it can be the difference between a space and a detour. The Port Authority says booking JFK parking at least 3 hours in advance saves money and guarantees a spot. The Metropolitan Airports Commission says prebooking at MSP guarantees a place to park, and that reservations can be changed or cancelled for a full refund up to 12 hours before arrival.

Each airport sets its own rules, so a booking at one airport tells you nothing about another. Read the confirmation, note which lot it covers, and keep the entry credential available offline. The Port Authority also advises parking only on-airport or with an authorized off-airport parking provider at JFK.

Parking for more than a month

Long trips need a call ahead. O'Hare asks drivers who will park longer than 30 days to make arrangements in advance, and says vehicles left that long without them will be considered abandoned and may be towed at the owner's expense. The Port Authority applies a similar rule at JFK: a vehicle that is not registered with the lot operator and stays more than 30 days is treated as abandoned.

If you lose something in an airport parking lot

Where you lost the item determines who to contact.
