DOT calls an estimate that repeatedly moves later a “creeping delay.” Weather may fail to improve, or a mechanical problem may prove more complex than first expected. A flight can remain listed as delayed while the airline tries to preserve the operation, then become canceled after an aircraft, crew, or safe operating window is no longer available.

  1. Confirm the status with the airline. FAA airport data describes general conditions, not an individual flight. Check the airline app, website, message, or airport agent.
  2. Ask for the recorded cause. The distinction between an airline-controlled event and weather or another external event can affect the services promised in the carrier’s customer service plan.
  3. Review the offered replacement. Check the new departure airport, arrival airport, connection, date, and cabin before accepting it. If the route no longer works, ask about other options the airline offers.
