American Airlines MSP Terminal: Check-In, Security and Map Guide

If your itinerary says American Airlines at MSP, set your directions for Terminal 1. MSP Airport lists American among the airlines in Terminal 1, while a different group of carriers operates from Terminal 2. The two terminals use separate access roadways, so choosing the correct terminal before you arrive avoids an unnecessary transfer.

Where is American Airlines at MSP?

American Airlines departures use Terminal 1 at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport. MSP's official terminal page links to the live Terminal 1 airport map. Use that map and your current boarding pass together: the terminal is fixed by the airport's airline listing, but your flight's gate should be confirmed on the day of travel.

How to depart on American Airlines from MSP

1. Open your boarding pass. Confirm that the airport code is MSP and review the latest gate information supplied by American.
2. Follow signs for Terminal 1. MSP says its terminals are accessed from separate roadways, so do not navigate to Terminal 2.
3. Go to Level 2 if you need airline service. MSP places all Terminal 1 airline ticketing and bag-check services in the Ticketing Lobby on this level.
4. Choose a security checkpoint. The airport says Terminal 1 passengers may use the North or South checkpoint on the Ticketing level. If you booked MSP RESERVE, use the North Checkpoint.
5. Check the map and flight display after screening. Follow the concourse and gate shown for your flight rather than relying on an old screenshot or a previous trip.

Terminal 1 versus Terminal 2

The most useful distinction is the airline assignment, not which terminal looks closer on a road map. American Airlines is on MSP's Terminal 1 list. Terminal 2 serves a separate set of airlines, and MSP warns that the terminals are approached from different roadways.

Security and identification

MSP says checkpoint wait estimates can change rapidly. Check the airport's live security page before leaving for the terminal, then follow the operating checkpoint signs when you arrive. TSA sets the screening rules: its published liquids rule allows carry-on liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in a quart-sized bag, with containers limited to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

For identification, TSA says REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. A passport is one acceptable alternative described by TSA for domestic boarding. Review TSA's current acceptable-ID guidance before leaving home if you are unsure whether your document qualifies.
